There are five beautiful carved Havelis (Houses) near Mahaveer Bhawan, built by the Patva brothers in 1800-1860 A.D.

The Patvas who constructed (Treasure of architecture) Havelis were a class who used to deal in Zari and Badla(silver and golden threads) ornaments as the Patva title suggests.

In this family Guman chand patwa jain was an intelligent businessman. He had five sons, Bhadurmal, who was attached to the Kota state and likewise Swai ram, was attached to jhalrapatan state, Magni ram to ratlam and fourth son jorawar mal to Udaipur and fifth son pratap chand to jaisalmer fort.

The patva were businessmen, banker opium exporters and revenue contractors.

Guman chand patwa jain had business concerns at more than 300 places in India, Afghanistan and China. In the 19th century jaisalmer city was a centre for traders engaging in the caravan trade with the neighbouring state through or via the Thar Desert.

Each of the five Havelis has been well decorated with splendid carvings, Jharokhas, Ghokhras, Baris, Tibaris (Sun Holes) and Kanwal (Oriel Window).

The house of seth patva has such beautiful carved fronts that, it is a first sight difficult to realise that the work is on stone. Inside the Haveli are some beautiful wall paintings, golden coloured roofs, magnificently carved rooms, balconies, lamps stand, niches, water stores, fountains at each corner, underground store and wooden doors are very attractive. The roofs are painted with golden coloured polish and art on glass is a sight to be seen.

On the top of the Havelis we can see a golden view of the city and fort. Its looks very fine during sunrise and on a full moon night. At such moment its beauty can only be imagined and no words can be describe it. The finest among the Havelis is group of five houses meant for the five Patva sons. Now these Havelis are national monuments. Two havelis have been purchased by Government of Rajasthan No 3 and No 5 there is no entry fee, timing 10.30 am to 5.00 pm. Government Haveli entry: Indian Rs. 10.00 and Foreigner Rs. 50.00 .
