Sam Sand Dunes

Sam village is on the edge of the Desert National Park. One of the most popular excursions is to the sand dunes on the edge of the park, 42 KM. from Jaisalmer along a very good selected road maintained by the Indian Army. The vehicle admission fee is Rs. 5 and the camel admission fee is Rs.70. This Jaisalmer is the nearest real Sahara like desert. It is best to be here at sunrise or sunset. Many camel safaris spend a right at the dunes, just before sunset jeep loads of day trippers arrive from Jaisalmer to be chased across the sands by tenacious camel owners offering short rides and the young boys are found for selling soft drinks. This place has become a massive tourist attraction, so don't set your heart on a solitary desert sunset experience. The hordes of people here at sunset lend the place something of a carnival atmosphere. If you want a less tourist sand dunes experience, Khuri is a much more peaceful and pristine alternative.

Despite the tourist hype, it is still quite a magical place, and it is possible to farm pictures of solitary camels against looney dunes. The desert dung beetles are fascinating to watch. These industrious little creatures roll lumps of dung twice their size. It's a heartbreaking sight to see a beetle lose control of a piece of dung it has rolled halfway up a sand dunes.

One tragic consequence of the increasing number of visitors to the dunes is the debris and rubbish at their base. Visitors are now charged a fee to visit the dunes, Money which could be put to good use to clean them up, but is more likely lining the pocket of some local official. If you feel strongly about the rubbish here, a letter to the Chief Tourism Officer might have some effect. For further information, contact the Desert National Park deputy director in Jaisalmer.
